The Venice Carnival born many centuries ago, when Venice was the center of the world trade and one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe: the era of the Serenissima. During Carnival, the city was transformed into a world of masks and costumes, there were temporarily no rules and social classes mingled. This tradition was restored in 1979 and since then the Venice Carnival has become an annual event that attracts tourists from all over the world.
The flight of the angel: the magical highlight of the Carnival.
The most eagerly awaited event of the Venice Carnival is the flight of the angel, a tradition dating back to the 16th century, when an acrobat flew from St Mark’s bell tower to the square on a rope. Today, the angel is a young Venetian girl, selected year after year, wearing a luxurious dress and a spectacular mask. She also descends from the bell tower into the crowd in the square with a special pulley, creating a magical atmosphere and leaving everyone breathless. The Carnival of Venice is preparing to amaze all its visitors by taking them in the footsteps of Marco Polo on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death. Already since the 27th of January, various street performers will enliven the Venetian calle and piazzas, backed by sumptuous masks that will pay homage to the intrepid merchant and his miraculous explorations. “Ad Oriente… il mirabolante viaggio di Marco Polo” (To the East… Marco Polo’s astonishing voyage) is the theme of the Venice Carnival 2024, taking us back to the adventures that characterized the history of the Serenissima in a mix of commerce, business, politics and both scientific and geographical knowledge. This was the resourcefulness and curiosity of Venetian merchants, this is the spirit of Venice!
