Canaletto & Venice
Venice is always worth a visit, especially if there is the possibility of seeing an exhibition like that of Canaletto housed in the Doge’s Apartment in Ducal Palace but also inside the Querini Stampalia Foundation. Only these two palaces would be worthwhile to be visited to be able to discover the path of this great artist, diving completely into the Venetian eighteenth century that from the beginning shows itself as a century of enormous vitality and great changes in the language of art, in the history of ideas and techniques, in social life. The exhibition is directed by Gabriella Belli and curated by Alberto Craievich.
Until June 9th it is therefore possible to admire the works of Giovanni Antonio Canal, Canaletto referring to an artistic period of great complexity and value, of excellence in the field of painting, sculpture, decorative arts. The exhibition starts from the appearance in the first years of a new art form, which breaks the bonds with the rigor of Classicism and with the theatricality of the Baroque, while color takes precedence over design. In the works the light acquires a founding, constitutive value and Canaletto uses it in painting views. History and landscape painting are born, while Murano glassmaking lives on in its splendor. The exhibition itinerary also includes works by Luca Carlevarijs, Rosalba Carrera, Giambattista Tiepolo, Pietro Longhi, Giambattista Piranesi, Francesco Guardi, Giandomenico Tiepolo – son of Giambattista and finally Antonio Canova.
