Inside the exhibition, curated by Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark, you can contemplate works of art by Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Berthe Morisot, Renoir, Matisse. The Bano Foundation and the Municipality of Padua were chosen for Italy, together with three other world locations, to host the famous Danish Collection, on the occasion of the renewal of the Copenhagen Museum dedicated to it. The exhibition will allow the Italian public to admire an amazing selection of works, the best of the Collection created in the early twentieth century by banker, insurer, Councilor of State and philanthropist Wilhelm Hansen and his wife Henny. Collection that is considered today one of the most beautiful European collections of Impressionist art.
For the collection Hansen built a new gallery where the public could admire his 156 works ranging from neoclassical and romantic paintings, with David and Delacroix, to realism and impressionism, to post-impressionism with Cézanne and Gauguin, and finally Matisse as the first of the fauve.
In 1922, the Danish farmers’ bank, the largest private bank in the country, failed and dragged into its bankruptcy the financier and collector who, in order to avoid the collapse, decided to sell off his French paintings.
Then the recovery and, with it, the decision to reconstitute the Collection.
Among the new acquisitions were the Portrait of George Sand of Delacroix, a Navy at Le Havre of Monet, The Wrestler of Daumier. Even the fabulous interpretation of Courbet of the Roe deer in the snow joined the Hansen collection, where it would take its place as one main works.
The last purchase was a small pastel of Degas, depicting a dancer who bent to adjust the shoe. The pastel had previously been owned by Paul Gauguin, who was a great admirer of Degas. In 1931, Hansen bought the crayon from the Danish politician and writer Edvard Brandes, who had had it from his sister-in-law, Mette Gauguin.
The collection was complete, but it was no longer open to the public. It was his wife who transmitted the collection to the state of Denmark, making it public.
