Thermal Water: Between Science and Myth

The waters of the thermal basin of Abano and Montegrotto Terme belong to the category of deep underground waters and are classified chemically as hyperthermal saline-bromine-iodine waters with a total dissolved solids residue at 180°C of 6 g/l.
The chemical data indicate highly thermal water of high mineral content, possessing broad-spectrum therapeutic properties. The water temperature in our pools is maintained at 33°C, and this temperature consistency is ensured by an automatic system that also guarantees the cleanliness and safety of the water.
At the AbanoRitz, the thermal water emerges from our well at over 80°C, while it is used in thermal baths (ranging from 33°C to 38°C) for both recreational and therapeutic purposes. This thermal gradient generates geothermal energy, allowing the hotel to be heated sustainably. Therefore, AbanoRitz has been involved in Green Energy initiatives for 50 years!

LEGEND

Legend has it that the mythical Hercules, who set out with his heroic Greek companions to confront Geryon, weary and tired after killing him, were restored by the miraculous virtues of those hot waters and no longer wished to return to Greece. They were also attracted by the beauty of the Hills and decided to settle there permanently. The Hills were called Euganei precisely because of the nobility of their lineage (“Euganei” is hypothesized to derive from the Greek “of noble lineage”). The spring that had given so much relief to the warriors was called Aponon in Greek. Hercules himself, to purge the wrongdoing against Geryon, built a temple in Abano in his honor, allowing him to become a true oracle. As Suetonius writes, this legend was well known in the Roman world; hence Emperor Tiberius, while traveling one day in Illyria, wanted to consult this renowned oracle and received a decisive response, specifically that he should throw golden dice into the spring, right where Abano is today, to know his impending fate. The legend tells that the thrown dice made the water precious, attributing to it uncommon qualities to heal various diseases.
