Four professors from the University of Padua<\/a><\/span><\/strong> have been included among the 100 experts in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)<\/strong>. The project – an online database of women’s excellence – is called “100 Women Against Stereotypes<\/a><\/span><\/strong>” and aims to give the Italian scientists more media coverage<\/strong> and to identify authoritative voices that can contribute to public debate at institutional or In other contexts.<\/p>\n

The first 100 experts<\/strong> have been identified in the field of hard sciences<\/strong>, “a sector historically under-represented<\/strong> by women and at the same time strategic for the economic and social development of our country.” The plan,<\/strong> however, is to continue to expand over time, to reach further discipline<\/strong> and to act as a tool for researching authoritative sources to contribute to public debate, even beyond the boundaries of the media.<\/p>\n

The scientists<\/h1>\n

The Paduan scientists reported are:<\/p>\n

  • Giovannella Baggio<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Professor of general medicine<\/strong> and president of the National Center for Health and Gender Medicine;<\/li>\n
  • Patrizia Burra<\/span><\/a>, Gastroenterologist<\/strong> and current vice-rector\u00a0for post-lauream training;<\/li>\n
  • Daniela Lucangeli<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Expert in psychology<\/strong> of development and learning and a vice-rector of school-university-work continuity;<\/li>\n
  • Antonella Viola<\/span><\/a>, Winner of an Erc Advanced Grant<\/strong>, which deals mainly with immunology and immunotherapy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The project<\/h1>\n

    The project “100 Women Against Stereotypes<\/strong>” starts from the consideration that the media rarely take into account the voice of women<\/strong> as experts<\/strong>; this happens even in 82% of cases, according to the Global Media Monitoring Project 2015<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. The project’s creators, Giovanna Pezzuoli, Luisella Seveso and Monica Azzalini<\/strong>, wanted to try to reverse this trend by creating a database designed to collect female contributions<\/strong>\u00a0to the world of research, from politics to science.<\/p>\n

    The project was carried out by the Pavia Observatory<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and the GiULiA<\/span><\/strong><\/a> Journalist’s Association, with the technical participation of the GENDERS Center<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>of the University of Milan and Wikimedia<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, in collaboration with the Bracco Foundation<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and with the support of the Representation in Italy of European Commission<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
